Haiyang Liuhao Sailed for Another Expedition Voyage
At 10 Am on May 28, China's Haiyang Liuhao marine research vessel set off again from the port of Guangzhou, sailing to the Pacific Ocean to perform deep-sea resources survey and China Ocean 32nd scientific investigation tasks. It was scheduled to return to Guangzhou in the beginning of November after completing its 160-day voyage. A total of 104 crew members were on board.
The 40-day deep-sea resources investigation voyage was organized by China Geological Survey and implemented by Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey. Based on the work last year, the voyage would carry out deep-sea resources survey to provide the basis for the location of the prospective areas of rare earth resources in the deep sea.
China Ocean 32nd voyage, comprising of 3 navigation legs, was organized by China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association, and expected to carry out resources, environmental and biological investigation in the eastern Pacific and western Pacific Ocean. 3 main tasks were included during the 120-day sailing time: 1)Carrying out the evaluation of resources and environment in Western Pacific Ocean seamount cobalt-rich crusts Contract Area and the East Pacific Ocean Polymetallic Nodules Contract Area. 2) Conducting investigative survey of the new marine resources in Pacific international waters. 3) Carrying out related scientific research.
During the ocean expedition, Haiyang Liuhao will carry out the following investigations: near the bottom of the micro-topography and subbottom profiles survey, columnar sampling (gravity sampling or piston sampling), boxing sampling, multitube sampling, underwater camera shooting, CTD survey, layered biological trawling, mooring observing, polymetallic nodules trawling and etc.. In addition, Haiyang Liuhao will use Qianlong Yihao 6000M unmanned untethered bathyscaphe, which is independently developed by China, to carry out experimental applications in optics and acoustics.
