UNESCO International Center on Global-scale Geochemistry to be Established
The establishment of UNESCO International center on global-scale geochemistry (the Center in short hereinafter)will be officially announced on May 12, 2016. On the same day, an agreement will be signed between Ministry of Land and Resources(MLR) and UNESCO and Report on China’s Geochemical Survey will be released by China Geological Survey as well.
As early as October 2009, academician Xie Xuejin, Dr Wang Xueqiu and Dr Smith have made a joint proposal on the establishment of the Center based on Institute of Geophysicaland Geochemical Exploration,Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. The proposal has been approved by UNESCO and State Council of China respectively in November 2013 and September 2015.
The founding of the Center made MLR become the only national ministry in China which owns two Category 2 centers under the auspices of UNESCO.International Research Center on Karst has been established in 2008 based on Karst Geological Institute of Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Guilin, Guangxi Province, China. China has been actively involved in international research on geochemical programs in recent years. Meanwhile, China has accounted for 135 items of 355 international geochemical programs up to the end of 2015.Chinese scientists have been engaged in 10 out of 22 undergoing programs in 2015, ranking No.1 among all member countries.
