China is Planning to Launch Marine Gas Hydrate Drilling Project in 2015

Updated :08,01,2014
The 8th ICGH was held at the National Convention Center, Beijing on 29 July. China will continue its efforts in investigation and evaluation of gas hydrates in the sea area and land-based permafrost zone in the coming years. Priorities will be given to gas hydrate forming theories, prospecting technologies, environmental impacts and development of production test technologies, etc. China is going to implement the gas hydrate drilling project in sea area of China in 2015, a driving force for the prospecting and development process in this field.

With the theme Opportunity and Challenge-Development and Utilization of Gas Hydrates, the 8th ICGH program conducted discussions on all facets of gas hydrate, including fundamentals, natural systems, energy, environmental impacts, and flow assurance, and demonstrated the latest progress and achievements. The international conference was jointly organized by China geological Survey and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the largest one in the history of ICGH, with more than 700 representatives and experts from 28 countries, and over 620 papers collected. within the four days, 1 keynote speech, 5 plenary sessions, 3 parallel themes, and 112 oral sessions were presented, in addition to which ten brilliant college students from Singapore, Canada, Russia, India and China were sponsored by organizers for attendance.

China has paid great attention to gas hydrate investigation and prospecting work, and relevant programs have been set up and funds raised. Gas hydrate prospecting area was delineated based on the fundamental investigation through the comprehensive package of geological, geophysical, geochemical and biological investigation, and breakthrough was made in 2007 by the collection of samples in northern South China Sea for the first time, followed by samples obtained in the land-based permafrost area in Qilian mountain in 2009, new types of samples collected in South China Sea North Slope in 2013, and samples drilled again in the land-based permafrost area in Qilian mountain the same year.

According to the conference, production test studies have been going on across the globe and attaining progress in recent years. US Department of Energy, in partnership with Conoco phillips and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, has made a success in production test by the replacement of CO2 and methane hydrate from February to April 2012. Production test of gas hydrate was also executed in Nankai trough of Japan, leading to the extraction of methane from matine gas hydrate for the first time, with the cumulative production volume reaching 130,000 cubic meters within 6 days, making Japan the first country in the world equipped with development technologies of gas hydrate. Light has been brought to human being for the utilization of gas hydrate by all of the efforts.
