The Fifth Session of APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining Meeting Was Held in Beijing
APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining Meeting(MRM5), one of the important events during APEC China Year, was held in Beijing on June 26-28. Chinese State Concilor Wangyong was present at the meeting and made the opening remarks. Minister of Land and Resources Wang Daming presided over the meeting, and representatives over 18 APEC member economies , APEC Secretariat, and APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC)participated in the meeting, together with personnel responsible for relevant departments.
With “Closer Mining Cooperation for Transformation and Growth” as the theme, MRM5 conducted in-depth discussions on such topics as closer Asia-Pacific mining partnership, innovation-driven growth, social responsibility and mutual development, and agreed on the Joint Declaration on the Fifth Session of APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining Meeting, and reached broad consensus.
The meeting pointed out that Asia-pacific Region serves as an engine for global economic growth, and an important exporter and consumer for mining products. The development, utilization, process, investment and trade of mineral resources have played a very important part in socio-economic development advancement, job creation, poverty reduction, infrastructure improvement and gap narrowing among the different regions.
The meeting held the opinion that demand for mineral resources would remain high for a long period in the future across the globe. As a fundamental industry of great importance, parties concerned should work in collaboration to speed up the transformation and upgrading so as to continuously improve social, environmental and economic benefits. The meeting reiterated the support of regional economic integration and multi-lateral trade system. The importance of encouraging and supporting the technological innovation in mining has also been highlighted, as well as that of the performance of social responsibilities to the promotion of sustainable development of mining, the inclusiveness and development in a harmonious way.
As a high-level official mining forum of APEC, MRM5 aimed at conducting discussions on important issues regarding development of mining industry of the member economies and tabled the policy proposals. The previous four sessions were held respectively in Chile in 2004, South Korea in 2007, Russia in 2012, with Chinese delegations’ attendance for every meeting.
