China Completed Deep-sea Submersible Drill Trial
China's first domestically-made submersible deep-sea drill made a great success in its first trial run in the South China Sea on June 14. The "Sea Bull" spent ten hours drilling 60 meters into the seabed under 3,000 meters of water.
China is now the fourth country to possess this technology. The six-meter tall Sea Bull weighs eight tons. It has gone through rigorous compression tests before the final trial.
An area the size of a finger nail is able to withstand 300 kilograms of pressure, which equals to the combined weight of 4 adults. The leader of the Sea Bull inspection team said the success would significantly boost Chinese deep-sea technology.
The deep-sea submersible drill was jointly developed by Hunan University of Technology, Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey.
