The 1st Trilateral GeoSummit of CGS -GSJ-KIGAMHeld in Beijing

Updated :04,09,2015

On 8th April, the 1st Trilateral GeoSummit of CGS(short for China Geological Survey) &GSJ (short for  Geological Survey of Japan) & KIGAM (short for Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) was held in Beijing. Three parties signed the cooperative agreement on geosciences, while CGS and KIGAM renewed the MOU on geoscientific research after the formal meeting.

China, Japan and S.Korea have long built correlation under the framework of CCOP and ASEAN+3.The promotion of cooperation among the three parties will bring benefits to such international cooperative initiatives as Program of Basic Geological Survey for “One Belt and One Road”, which involves numerous member countries of CCOP and ASEAN in Southeast Asia.

Deputy Director of CGS Li Jinfa addressed the ceremony. He said that China, Japan and Korea were closely connected from the perspective of geological formation and metallogenic belts, and shared a bright future regarding international geological compilations, 3-D geological survey, underground water and geothermal, geo-environment and geo-hazards,marine geology, gas hydrate and mineral materials.Heads of GSJ and KIGAM expressed their wishes to enhance cooperation and exchanges in geosciences, and to co-build a platform for communication on geosciences and technology, thus lay a better foundation for geoscientific development. As agreed, a mechanism of taking turns to hold Trilateral Geo summit every two years in each party country was established.

Experts from CGS made presentations on the challenges and opportunities faced by geoscientific research on China’s coastal zones, achievements of geological survey informationization construction, global joint compilation and geological survey for shale gas. Experts from GSJ reviewed on their cooperative research or practices conducted with their counterparts from China and s.Korea on geological mapping, capacity building in terms of coastal zones and remote sensing. Experts from S.Korea briefed the audience of mapping techniques for mineral resource potentials based on 3-D geological model techniques, and the techniques for monitoring the Korean peninsula’s action and evolution of Baitou-Changbai magma.

Fruitful results have been yielded through the cooperation among the three parties even before 2013.CGS and GSJ have jointly conducted research on equilibrium, simulation and forecasting of recyclingand utilization of undergroundwater of Yellow River, and the Meso Cenozoicvolcano-intrusion and comparative research on metallogenicmechanism of southeast China and Japan.CGS and KIGAM developed their cooperative relations on comparative study on geology and mineral resources in South China and Korean peninsula.
